Is Football Coaching in Mexico for Teenagers right for me?
This project, exclusive for the World Cup 2026 period, is perfect if you’re looking to live and breathe your passion for football in a new culture. Not only will you build your coaching ability and help inspire local children, you’ll also develop your confidence, independence, and Spanish skills.
You’ll coach in Guadalajara, host to four matches during the tournament, including Mexico’s second group-stage fixture on Thursday 18 June. This is an incredible opportunity to see Mexico’s passionate football culture and World Cup atmosphere for yourself. You’ll even get to tour the Estadio Akron, host to four matches during World Cup 2026, seeing the player tunnel, changing rooms, and pitch.
You’ll develop your own skills by working alongside experienced coaches on the pitch. You can then teach these new skills to the children you’ll be working with. You’ll even get to organise a small tournament to see the results of your work.
Outside of your coaching, you’ll watch live World Cup matches in the city fan zones, learn to salsa dance, and explore the historic districts of the city. On the weekend, visit the seaside town of Lo de Marcos and snorkel surrounded by coral. It is a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
You don’t need any prior coaching experience to join, just a passion for football and the desire to learn and grow. You’ll travel with other teens from all over the world, sharing your passions and interests, and forming lifelong friendships.
What will I be doing as a volunteer football coach in Mexico?
As a football volunteer in Mexico, you’ll work with experienced coaches to inspire young players in Guadalajara. You’ll help local children exercise, train, and hone their techniques while also developing your own understanding of the beautiful game.
Here are a few of the tasks you can expect to do during your placement:
- Coaching sessions - Lead training sessions to teach local children strategies and techniques to help improve their game. Use your experience to show them new skills, provide advice and information to break down defences, and most importantly, have fun!
- Tactical analysis - Learn to analyse the game from the perspective of a manager, identifying the right formation for your players and ways to outsmart your opposition. Run drills and training sessions to ensure your players know exactly what to do on the pitch.
- Match refereeing - Step into the shoes of a referee and find out how hard it is to have the responsibility of a match on your shoulders. Follow the play with a new perspective, spotting fouls and offsides as both the main referee and as one of the assistants.
- Tournament organisation - Set up and run a tournament with your players, watching in real time how your coaching has influenced the way they play. Try pitching your tactics against the other coaches you’ve travelled with and see who comes out on top.
- Sporting workshops - Attend workshops on coaching, training methods, strategy, and nutrition, learning how each of these can greatly influence your players. See the sport through the eyes of a manager and understand why healthy choices are so important for fitness.
During your volunteer football coaching project in Mexico, you will develop a wider understanding of football both as a coach and player. You’ll help to build the skills of young players while also learning directly from experienced coaches yourself.
You will also enjoy an immersive experience in a fascinating new culture, eating delicious food and meeting amazing people. Join us on this incredible journey and let your passion for football come to life at World Cup 2026!
Where in Mexico will I be working?
Guadalajara
Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco in western Mexico, is steeped in tradition and brimming with modern energy. With a population of over 1.4 million, it’s the second-largest city in Mexico, and boasts a rich history and mild climate year round.
Famed for its mariachi music, tequila, and delicious cuisine, the city houses historic landmarks like the Guadalajara Cathedral and the Teatro Degollado. Wander along cobbled streets and experience the lively atmosphere of this enchanting city.
What are the aims and impact of this project?
Beyond providing you with the chance to experience a host city of World Cup 2026, the aim of this project is to enhance your understanding of sports education and global perspectives.
You will learn about coaching techniques, nutrition, tactics, and strategy in the context of real football matches. This will help develop your understanding of the game from the side-lines and help you more effectively prepare for your own matches.
Off the pitch, your experience will help develop your language skills, cross-cultural understanding, and interpersonal skills. You’ll build upon existing leadership skills, confidence, and adaptability as you navigate life in a new and exciting environment.
You’ll also promote teamwork, confidence, and inclusion among young players in the local community. Sports, but especially football, are incredibly effective tools for empowerment and community building, and your coaching could help forge friendships and passions that shape the lives of the children you work with.
Join us on this time-limited project and help make football a force for good.
Free Time & Leisure
While football coaching is fun and rewarding, you won’t spend all your time on the pitch. This project is designed to immerse you in the heart of a World Cup host city, and we’ll make sure you get to see all the sites while you’re there.
Firstly, you’ll get to watch two World Cup matches at a fan zone in the city, surrounded by the passionate people of Mexico. If you choose the trip starting on 14 June, you’ll be there for Mexico’s second group-stage game hosted in the city! The atmosphere will be electric as you explore historic districts, try authentic Mexican cuisine, and join a salsa class.
You’ll also enjoy a detailed stadium tour of the famous Estadio Akron, home to C.D Guadalajara and where the World Cup matches will be played. See the tunnel, press room, changing rooms, and go pitch-side in a true behind-the-scenes look at the lives of professional footballers.
Over the weekend, enjoy a two-day excursion to the seaside paradise of Lo de Marcos. There, you will go on a thrilling boat ride to Isla Coral, snorkelling in and sharing clear water with dolphins, turtles, and seabirds. Plus, head on a morning coastal hike with beautiful ocean views with the chance to see iguanas and tropical birds.
Food & Accommodation
During your time in Mexico, you will stay at a comfortable hotel with all the amenities you expect, three meals a day, and safe drinking water. It is the same for your weekend excursion to Lo de Marcos, just with the benefit of being by the sea.
We’ve made sure our accommodation in Guadalajara is clean, safe, and welcoming, exactly what you need for an enjoyable adventure. You’ll likely share a room with at least one other Projects Abroad participants of the same gender and a similar age.
You’ll also get the chance to try excellent traditional Mexican cuisine, including tacos, tortillas, and tamales.
